Energy
By international comparison, energy use in Iceland is in a class by itself. Per capita energy consumption is practically the highest known, and the proportion of this provided by renewable energy sources is greater than in other countries. Nowhere else does geothermal energy play a greater role in energy supply, as Iceland is among those nations with the highest utilization of this energy resource, not only per capita but in absolute terms. In addition to geothermal energy, energy supply in Iceland is based on hydropower and imported fossil fuels. The share of domestic energy sources has grown significantly in recent decades and in 2002, amounted to over 70% of the total energy consumption.
